Kids Morning Routine Chart: A Checklist That Works
School mornings go wrong in the same places: getting dressed, finding things, and screens. A short routine chart, in the right order and with a clear finish time, removes most of the reminders.
The order matters
Put the tasks that need a parent (breakfast, signing forms) in the middle, and the tasks kids drag their feet on (getting dressed) first, while there's still time. Screens come last, as the reward for being ready — never before.
Example checklists
Ages 4–6 (with pictures if they can't read yet)
- Toilet and wash hands
- Get dressed (clothes laid out the night before)
- Breakfast
- Brush teeth
- Shoes and coat on
Ages 7–9
- Make the bed
- Get dressed
- Breakfast, plate in the sink
- Brush teeth and hair
- Check the school bag: homework, lunch, water bottle
Ages 10–13
- Shower or wash, get dressed
- Make breakfast and the lunchbox
- Brush teeth
- Pack the bag from tonight's list
- Out the door by the agreed time — without being reminded
How long should it take?
Time the routine once on a calm day and add ten minutes. Then set a single "ready by" time, for example 7:45, rather than a time for every step. Older kids can manage the order themselves; younger ones do better with a timer on the slow steps.
Move half the morning to the night before
Laying out clothes, packing the bag and signing forms the evening before saves more time than any morning chart. A three-item bedtime routine ("clothes out, bag packed, phone on the charger") makes mornings much easier.
When tasks aren't finished
- Don't add new reminders; point at the chart.
- Keep one clear, predictable consequence: no games or videos until the routine is done.
- Praise the routine, not perfection — a fully done chart three days out of five is real progress.
A morning chart on your child's phone
With KiddoTurn the morning checklist lives on your child's phone with a "ready by" time. If the routine is overdue, the games and videos you picked pause until it's done; when the last task is ticked off, they're back. Calls and messages always work, so your child can still reach you on the way to school.
